Just when we thought that drones have come a long way, here is a new drone that flies like a bird on its own if you just toss it in the air. The Lily drone can be flinged up in the air just about anywhere and then the drone would not only rise up in the air but also follow wherever you go and click your photos. The demo video shows how precisely the drone balances itself once its flung in the air.
The best part of the video was the fact that the user never even touched the controller and it seems that the drone knew what to do and when to do as it followed him through a skiing trail. The Lily drone is the brainchild of Lily Robotics which is a five-person company formed by Berkeley grads funded by Ron Conway, the Silicon Valley investor of Google and PayPal fame.
Lily follows a circular pod, which will be with the user and with a slight tap of the button the drone can do some moves and take amazing pictures without losing the focus on the user. According to Bradlow, the co-founder of Lily Robotics, the drone is fitted with a camera that is somewhat similar in specs with Go Pro 3 and it can record 1080p videos. Lily can also can capture stills as well as 360 degree panorama pictures.
The drone can fly at a maximum speed of 25mph and offers an airtime of 20 minutes on a single charge. Another icing on the cake is the fact that Lily can be setup in various modes like follow and lead.
